Bosnia and Herzegovina
We reluctantly left the Bacina Lakes and crossed the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina.
We tracked the Nevetva river inland and it was quite harrowing, with immediate evidence of the 1990s war, with damaged buildings and infrastructure.
We travelled as far as Mostar, which is a city in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, straddling the Neretva River. It’s known for the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge), a reconstructed medieval arched bridge. Along with the Old Town, it was destroyed in the 1992 - 1995 war, then rebuilt. The nearby alleys are full of shops and market stalls.
We visited the Museum of War and Genecide, which explains what happened during the 1992-1995 war, with all its brutality - genocide, concentration camps, mass graves and crimes against children. Shocking that something so terrible has happened so recently.
The local people were extremely friendly and helpful.
There are many beautiful mosques and chapels.
